Do you ever have one of those moments where you say something and you are certain other people have been in that situation as well only it turns out you seem to be the only person who has in fact experienced that?
For example, when I lived in the Barlow Center there was a girl who told me that she liked to put hot dogs in the freezer, take them out once frozen and then lick them. She asked me, "Don't you do that?" I just shook my head with a look of disgust on my face.
Yesterday I was chatting with Andrea, and somehow the topic of sixth grade fashion came up. I told her that I had a Sesame Street T-Shirt, that I would wear, and I had it because that was what the cool kids wore and I wanted to be cool (it may be hard to believe but I was not the coolest kid in sixth grade...I know ssssssssssssssssssssssssssshocking). I distinctly remember going to the Sesame Street store and getting an ash colored T-Shirt that had Grover, Elmo, Telly, Cookie Monster and maybe Oscar on it. I wore it to school the next day and remember that Mike Deleon wanted to trade shirts with me, and Naomi Urich complemented me on it (I was shocked that she would even speak to me). Now there is nothing inherantly cool about a sesame street shirt, I would only wear it because they were trendy. Andrea thought this was the dumbest thing, I explained to her that I didn't like Sesame Street when I was 11, I just wanted to fit in. Perhaps this was something that wasn't popular in Sandy, so I asked Jim from Denver -nope, Mary from Nor Cal- Nope, Quinn from Idaho-Nope, Meg from Utah-Nope, Holly from Arizona-Nope, Dan from Wisconsin-Nope, Anna from Pennsylvania-Nope. Not a single person remembered Sesame Street T-shirts being cool or in.

I'm sure Dani Lee will remember that I retired the shirt and gave it to the cousins that summer as Sesame Street Shirts were no longer the rage. I don't know if I have photographic proof of this phenomenon but I'm pretty sure there exists a picture of Don and my cousin Alexander wearing Sesame Street T-Shirts. I need to know if this was just limited to the greater Whittier area. Josh, Jordan, JJ, and Danielle Nandy if you are reading this, I need you to confirm that I am not making this up. Andrea gave me a hard time for at least thirty minutes about this and then admitted that Doc Marten Sandals were really trendy for her in junior high (so Utah). I am hopeful that you will share examples of relating an experience in which you were confident others had shared and found that not to be the case, trendy things you look back at and wonder why, or a knowledge that kids at Granada Middle School did in fact wear Seasame Street T-Shirts in 1992-1993.

LOL... I asure you all that Pete is not making this up. I totally remember you wearing that shirt. Also, if you recall I had a similar "cool" shirt that had bugs bunny and the tazmania devil on it, they were wearing baggy rapper clothing. I assure you that these were both very sought after t-shirts!
For me it was the word "umbers." You got it. You say it when someone has done something that will for sure get them in trouble - it was the first signal of doom to hear "Uuuuuuuumbeeeerrrs." I only know of my family and one other family that used it constantly growing up - we swore we got it from Full House, but no one else remembers it. Now it's just a freaky connection between my family and the Dennis'.
I've also found that not everyone understands the term "biff it." But I KNOW that's not just a Colorado thing.
I'm going to need picture proof illustrating that it was in fact "cool." Otherwise, Sesame Street clothing should not be worn past age 4. ;)
I proudly wore that as a pajama shirt for many years. Thanks cuz.
Also, I'm reminded prety much on a daily basis by my sisters that what I wear and what I do is not cool. Sometimes you don't need other peoples approval.
Come to Whittier. Right now.
Pete, either I have a bad memory or this particular trend was specific to the class of 99. I have no memory of Sesame Street clothes being fashionable at Granada. I remember Stussy and Mossimo were cool brands. Reebok pumps were very cool (and definitely helped you play better basketball). And overalls with the straps hund down at the sides also had their time in the sun (I definitely rocked the overalls for a few months). I almost went for the oversized Mexican poncho but couldn't bring myself to do it. The step haircut with a wave in the front was essential. That's about all I can remember about middle school trends in Whittier.
I try not to remember Middle School...shuuuuder
I'm with JJ. I don't remember the Sesame Street stuff. I remember girls had pacifiers for some reason, cross colors clothing, and WAY back T&C neon surf t shirts, but no sesame street. They sell Mossimo at Target now and it used to be cool... weird.
As one of your oldest friends I should say that yes you are right, Sesame Street shirts were cool and I remember you wearing them, but I can't say that because I don't remember it. (You had a tan colored Bushwacker's shirt, but not a Sesame Street shirt.) I remember people wearing sport's jersey's. You had your first Steve Young jersey that you wore all the time.
Oh Sesame street was so popular - my freshman year at LS. It was more because it was "retro" or whatever. Nancee had a little stuffed animal elmo that we made a costume for and made our official LS tennis mascot, we even took turns taking that little guy to class, he was so cool. Of course I remember the sesame street store at Brea Mall - that place was always packed, for the whole two years that Sesame rage lived on.
Sigh from ELMO to EMO . . .
