Thoughts on Curling, Valentine's Day, I'd Rather Die, and Other Unrelated Topics

I've heard that when I do bullet points it's a sign of laziness, that being said, I don't think people always want a narrative, and it's my blog, I can write however I want.

  • Setting my own hours is an interesting thing. I'm still getting used to not going into an office. I have enjoyed the flexibility, but it can be pretty quiet during the day. I'll let you know how it goes.
  • If I had to describe the winter games in one made up word I'd go with Vonntastic.
  • Speaking of the winter Olympics, Joe, Dan, Kat Anette and myself went curling on Saturday.

The US Curling Association held a demonstration in the basement of a hotel downtown. We thought we would be using real ice. It turned out that it was more like a dry erase board. I did gain a new found respect for curling. The stone was 42 lbs which is about half my body weight, and isn't easily steered.

So it wasn't the authentic experience that we were hoping for but it was still fun to do.
  • On Friday night I went to see the movie Valentine's Day with Kat and the Two Pack (Amber and Holly) I went to the movie with super low expectations, because I heard it wasn't very good. Well It wasn't very good but it wasn't terrible. My girlfriend Taylor Swift was spazzy and funny, and despite the fact that a lot of it was very predictable, there was more than one moment where I was surprised. Call it a mild recommendation. I did have one major gripe, is there really any chance in a million years that either Jennifer Garner or Jessica Biel, or girls that had the same approximate level of beauty and charm would ever be alone on Valentine's Day except by choice. Totally unbelievable. We went to the 10:30 PM showing and surprisingly I stayed awake the whole time.
  • I've been mulling this over in my head for a few days, but I'm wondering when my grown up instinct and sensibility will fully kick in. Here's what I mean. The other day I was in Shirlington where they have a movie theater that shows movies that are a bit more artistic than your usual AMC or Regal. I noticed on the marquee that "Crazy Heart" was playing. My immediate instinct was to think, "I'd rather die than see that movie." This brought up two points, when will movies for grown ups start appealing to me (despite that I have zero interest in kids movies or cartoons unless they are comic book cartoons). I know that my parents would go to the movies and they might watch something like Crazy Heart, but I can't imagine I ever would. Maybe someday. Secondly I should stop using the phrase "I'd rather die than (fill in the blank) " it's a bit distasteful. But there are any number of seemingly innocuous activities that I have that reaction to. I'm wondering why I have this feeling (in reality I would of course prefer to live and watch the movie).
  • This is bound to stir up a little controversy. I hope everyone knows how much I love the USA. It is the greatest nation on earth and I like Lee Greenwood, I am proud to be an American. I do however root for Germany in international soccer and Sweden in international Ice Hockey. Why? Because I am half German and an adopted Swede, and those two sports mean more to their countires than they do to us as Americans. In honor of the Olympics I ordered this awesome T-Shirt.

It's the Tre Kronor (Three Crowns) I love it. The colors and design are awesome. Between Sweden and the Lakers I have a surprising number of Yellow T-Shirts. Hopefully USA, Germany, Sweden will finish 1-2-3 in the medal count.

  • After careful consideration by Dan, Joe and I we have determined that this young lady has a gold medal heart.

Why she hates Lindsey Vonn, is not totally clear. Once she becomes self actualized we'll all understand.
  • CBS Reality does it right. I'm back on board for my two favorite teality game shows, the Amazing Race and Survivor. They have filled the GTL void since Jersey Shore finished off it's season. I also enjoyed Teen Mom on MTV, and even found myself watching My Life As Liz.  Add that to the fact that I am hoping that Life Unexpected will be the new Dawson' Creek, and you have a pretty good idea of what I'm watching.
  • I don't exclusively hold the taste of a 16 year old girl, I watched UFC on Saturday Night, pretty great fights, and 24 is hit and miss this season. Still hearing Jack agreeing to be all in...well let's just say I was pleased by that.
  • "Your mom works very hard, just now she works for us." -Phil Dunphey
The year of Peter rolls on. I know I have said this before, but I am actively car shopping, still haven't decided what I want. But it's fun to narrow it down.

No go out there and get what you want. It's your year too.

I'm so happy that we have the same trashy t.v. taste. This made me laugh. You should totally watch the 'Vampire Diaries'.

Thanks for the post, Jeff Davis. So cause hockey means more to Canada you were pulling for the maple leaves on Sunday?

The look on my face is because there was no real ice. I was shocked.

Remember when the Jazz playoff slogan was "it's our year" - didn't turn out so well.

I'd like to see you perhaps video tape you for your own review as you actively sit there and root for Sweden as they play the USA. Utterly preposterous and unacceptable. There are no words to explain how messed up that is.

Welcome back Peter. Come over sometime instead of saying you will and then not.

Additional thoughts:

Those bullet points are equivalent to a narrative.

That curling demonstration must have been crawling with LDS singles.

Aw thanks Peter! I didn't even put you up to that one. Do I have to become self-actualized or does Lindsay Vonn? She's a lost cause. At least we agree that Apolo Ohno is already there.
