Homecoming at LSHS

For the first time since I was on the stage giving the home coming queen her flowers as Jordan crowned her in 1998, I went to my High School Homecoming. It was a chance to dust off the Letterman's jacket, see my Alma mater play football and run into people I haven't seen in years.
I doubt that many people who read my blog know that I was voted "Most Spirited" by the senior class (as well as most likely to be President of the United States so the politics thing goes way back) and homecoming was a huge part of that. It is a huge deal at La Serna as each of the classes builds a float based on a predetermined theme.
Freshman year the theme was books we did Robin Hood, I was Prince John.
Sophomore year Holidays we did Halloween, I was a farm boy with a stake through my face
Junior Year was Movies we did Wizard of Oz and I was an awesome Tin Man.
Senior Year I was on ASB and on the dais to give the Queen, my good friend Jenny Hill her flowers.
I was excited to go back and see what this years Lancers had to offer.
My one time prized possession. I loved this jacket and would wear it often my senior year. It still fits and I still look awesome in it. Varsity athlete ladies...look out.

I saw a lot of things that reminded me of the old days. Mostly kids running around being stupid, acting like punks, cutting in line, and not paying attention to the game. Exactly like I used to do. The only difference is that now boys wear really tight pants. We probably would have been flogged for wearing pants that tight in my day.

The La Serna Lancers won the game 28-21 over the Whittier Cardinals the alma mater of my mom, Don, and Richard Milhouse Nixon. La Serna is 6-1 this year. Better than they ever were when I went there.

This years homecoming theme was "Board Games". It might as well have been "Bored Games" because it was kind of a lame theme. But the classes did the best they could with what they had.

Candyland, Monopoly, Jumaji, Battleship, and Operation were among the floats.

Seniors do Candyland. My as well have done "Sorry" because that's what it was.

My dad and I had a great time at the game. We used to go to the games virtually every week when I was in High School.

Cheerleaders on the LACFD truck. A La Serna Home Coming Tradition. LA County tax money hard at work.

Every year there is a Grand Marshal for the Parade. Usually a member of the faculty. This year it was Mr. Glen Sneddon. He was of one of my ASB advisers. A good man who worked as an extra on such shows as "Mommas Family" in the 80's. Local car dealerships loan convertibles for the Princesses and the Grand Marshal. Mr Sneddon was is an Orange Corvette.

I think the girl in the red won. The girl in the pink went to my elementary school about ten years after I did.

I often joked that I "peaked" in High School. I don't really believe that but It was a lot of fun to remember the old days as a La Serna Lancer.

One of my favorite things to say is, "high school is over." It works on many levels. Regardless, I can be appreciative of this post as it made me think of some of the memories of my days as a Brighton Bengal.

Good memories. You finally took the diaper off and graduated - but it's always good to reflect back on where we once were.

Final Score:

Brighton 56
La Serna 6

You know I was almost homecoming queen! We have a rather ghetto-style homecoming system where the "date" of the football player voted MVP is then crowned homecoming queen. My date missed by 1 vote! But he was also my friend's boyfriend and she couldn't be his date bc she went to another school...so she asked me to do it. Pretty messed up system! But it was still fun feeling like a princess for a day and getting to ride on top of a fancy convertable. Poor Julie. haha

I get to see you in 4 days! Get excited!

You would have dominated Butte County High School.

It is interesting to hear all these people talk about you in these ways and how you may have dominated their school. Now since I was there from the begining, and I do mean Hillcrest, I may shed some light, no Peter would not have dominated Butte County High School, at least not without help from Phil or Wendy. I have known Peter forever and that was no peak. I think the peak came freshmen year of college with a certain Alicia. And that picture in the letterman jacket, it looks like you finally filled it out. Well I think I have said enough for now, and I hope others have a better perspective of the real Pete Maverick.

Ahh, memory lane . . .

I kind of wish I would have gone with you and Dad to the game, though I have no letterman jacket, I think it would have been fun.

The real question, did you get to ride *on* the float every year? Except for Senior year when you were Jenny's date?

I did. :)
