Niner Fan Reacts

What I just went through must be documented for posterity. Anyone who knows me, is well aware that I am a die hard 49ers fan. Since I was seven years old I have had a deep and abiding love for the 49ers. While it was easy to root for the team in the 80's and 90's it has been lean times to say the least for the last ten years. But what a year it has been.

Yesterday at school I packed my bag with my 49ers gear all prepared to wear for the game. Yesterday at work I realized I hadn't put my bag in my car. Luckily I had my back up gear just in case. The Breniers just bought a 60 inch TV so I went over to their place to watch.

What can I say? WHAT A GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 49er defense played so well against one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL, and created five turnovers, but the offense was a bit stagnant. Then one of the most gut churning sequences started. After leading the whole game the Saints score and I start getting very nervous. The 49ers answer back, Alex Smith (a Ute) rolls out and despite the fact that the kids and their impressionable ears are there, I encourage Alex Smith with a series of rather strong language. It works and he scores. I am beyond ecstatic. I grab the kids and yell "WE'RE GOING TO TOYS R US!". There are cheers and everyone is thrilled. We just need to survive the next 2:18 and everything will be great. Well Drew Brees does not want me to be happy or my nieces and nephew to go to the toy store because he promptly hits Jimmy Graham in triple coverage and I am just sunk. From euphoria to despair in a matter of moments. So with one minute and thirty eight seconds left the Niners take the field. I am pacing around, freaking out, and otherwise having a very tough time. I always say big players come through at big times, and Vernon Davis came up huge. He made absolutely every big play, and when he caught the touchdown with nine seconds left, I just broke down.

Yes, a 31 year old man fell to the ground and cried. Ten years that included the Erickson, Nolan, and Singletary eras. Games started by Ken Dorsey, Tim Rattay, Cody Pickett, Troy Davis, and Shaun Hill just to name a few. A season where we went 2-14, this one felt really good.

The moment the Niners won the messages started pouring in. I was glad so many of my friends remembered how much I loved the Niners.

One win from the Superbowl.

Who's got it better than us? NOBODY!

Dear Peter,

I am glad that my husband was not the only grown man crying over a football game. ;) Congrats on the big win!
