The Problem With Expectations
It's been awhile since I have had to put up my personal Bat Signal but let me tell you, I don't know if I can describe things better than "good grief. " The problem with expectations is that every time you have them and things don't work out the way you think they should supposed to, you get very disappointed. While there was a very large and meaningful part of the weekend that could not have turned out any better (that will get its own post), all in all I was very disappointed.
If Mitt Romney, had not been up by ten points on Monday, if the 49ers had not beat the Giants earlier in the season, and the Lakers were not 16 time NBA champions, I would have had much lower expectations, and would not have been devastated the way I was last night. You wouldn't think that I would get so wrapped up in things that I have no control over but I do, and it hurts when they don't turn out the way I hope. I try to only think positively, not raise my hopes too much, and say all the right things so that the universe will not turn against me for being too prideful.
I'm reading a book right now called Nudge that I am enjoying. While I think it is arrogant and elitist to think that that government should nudge me in a certain direction, I generally agree with many of the ideas. One of the things I found interesting is that humans tend to take losses harder than the joy they feel from winning. For example, a person who lost one dollar would need to find two dollars for net neutral feelings. Two wins is to positive feelings as one loss is to negative feelings. And yet I continue to subject myself to this.
Last night as I was hanging up my 49ers gear I thought to myself, when do pitchers and catchers report, and put on my Angels T-Shirt. This morning it was raining. My only rain coats are 49ers, that seemed incredibly appropriate.
You know what they say, there's always next season.

Im so mad at Ted Ginn Jr. If he were healthy he most likely would not have fumbled. It's the NFC championship game sack up and play. Also, how bad are the Lakers? They need Dwight Howard AND Deron Williams. You need to have a talk with Jim Buss. Lastly, in reference to the book you are reading i also agree to an extent. When it comes to sports or competition I agree losses are harder than the joy of winning. However, think about compulsive gamblers they continue to lose, usually far more then they win. Then when they get that win it outweighs all their losses, which makes you believe the joy of winning outweighs the losses.
Tough tough loss. Not sure where it falls on Simmons' scale. As a Rams fan, I am supposed to hate the 49ers. I still remember being thrilled when the Giants beat the 49ers back in 1991. Yet, I found myself rooting for the 49ers this time since I don't really care about the Giants and I knew you were all in on the 49ers. (I will never root for the Lakers no matter how much you want them to win.) I hate that the game ended on a special teams fumble. I wanted to see one of the offenses actually drive down the field to win. If it wasn't for the turnover, I think it could have been one of the longest games ever. No disrespect to Snyder, but both defenses were amazing. Too bad it ended the way it did. I'm not going to throw out the customary "At least you had a great year" or "You'll be back next year". Every year is different, and if your team has a chance to make the super bowl and just misses it, you can never get that back and it sucks. Sorry champ.
