Taking a Break From Punch and Judy

I'm pretty sure I know the reason I have "success"when playing sports. I know my limitations. When I quarter back I know that my game is the best when I matriculate the ball down the field, putting the ball in a place where my receivers can make a play, and occasionally run it when I need to. When I drop back and try to gun it down the field, it usually ends up being an interception and a sore shoulder.

When I play volleyball, I don't try to go up and pound, instead I try to time my blocks and cover a lot of ground. And on the rare occasion that I play softball, I know that I am in fact a Punch and Judy hitter. I don't hit home runs, I'm not a power hitter. Some would say it doesn't help my chances with the ladies. Instead I hit singles, get on base and get batted in. I'm pretty successful with this method because I know my limitations.

That being said on occasion, I do throw a long bomb, I pound the volleyball, and ever so often I swing for the proverbial fences. Last week at the Home Run Derby was one of those occasions.

Last week was my good friend Dan Nelson's birthday. You may remember a previous birthday I planned for Dan two years ago. And if one birthday is good, two birthday's is great. May 4th is also Lauren's birthday. It was only natural that we have a double birthday party. Ashley and Mary planned an awesome Home Rub Derby complete with personally selected at bat music. After careful consideration I went with West Side Connection's Bow Down. And with that the mashing began. Well my approximation of mashing.

I was a little worried that I would make a total fool of myself. Luckily we hit softballs, and thanks to Chad's willingness to put them right over that plate, I looked pretty good. Yes, I had a fair amount of singles, but I did manage to make good contact and drive the ball. As far as I know I did not humiliate the Angels Uniform or the Dorsch name.

There was an excellent crowd, and they were very supportive. I was surprised a few times by some of the hitters, who were better than I expected. For the most part nobody embarrassed themselves out there.

I have been to a lot of really lame birthday parties where people stand around awkwardly with the lights on and no music and it is just kind of lame. This on the other hand was very fun. Ashley and Mary get a lot of  the credit because they put it together, and Dan and Lauren get credit because they were born. Ashley and Mary get some of the credit taken away because there were some Nate Clements, Champ Bailey types there, but we'll forgive them for that.
Lauren gets her picture with me for three reasons.
1. She provided the action shots for this post.
2. It was her birthday
3. She beat me in mini golf when I failed to know my limitations, and had a five and a six on back to back holes.

And Daniel J. Nelson for having a birthday I actually enjoyed. Well done young man...well done.
